May 12, 2018 Katelyn Tuohy Runs 9:47.88 For 3,200 meters By Walt Murphy, Special to DyeStat North Rockland NY sophomore Katelyn Tuohy, who just turned 16 on March 2, ran a solo 9:47.88 for 3,200 meters on Friday (May 11) at the 51st Glenn D. Loucks Games in White Plains, NY. That’s the fastest time ever run for the distance outdoors, bettering the 9:48.50 that Kim Mortensen (Thousand Oaks CA) ran in 1996. (Tuohy was timed at 9:10.4 for 3000-meters, No. 7 performance all-time). Unfortunately, her time, using Jack Shepard’s formula listed in his H.S. Track Annual, converts to 9:51.32 for 2-miles, which is ever-so-slightly faster than the National H.S. Record of 9:51.35, which was set by Brie Oakley (Grandview, CO) in 2017. I say unfortunately because this is just the latest example of how the misguided switch to 1600/3200 meters on the high school level many years ago has corrupted the statistical side of the sport! Now, at least until someone runs faster, there will be an ongoing debate over which runner, Oakley or Tuohy, is the best ever over eight laps of the track! (At least outdoors — Mary Cain ran 9:38.68 indoors in 2013). (T&F News uses a different formula, which yields a faster time of 9:51.29, but the problem remains the same). To his credit, Loucks Director (and White Plains coach) Fred Singleton did bring the mile back to the Loucks Games a few years ago. Next step is bringing back the 2-mile!
